You take your car to the experts to have it serviced, not because it is broken, but to keep it in good running order and to minimise repair costs. Why not your PC?
Take preventative measures to protect your system & files.
For your hardware
• Dust accumulation can cause your PC to overheat and may cause spontaneous reboots. (pcmag.com)
• A PC that runs hot will have a shorter life span for its components, and at extremes
of temperature, the possibility exists that the system will be unstable. (pcguide.com)
• If all the dust and contaminants were removed from the inside of all computers,
less than 1% would fail in a given year. (IBM)
For your health
• A keyboard is often “a reflection of what is in your nose and in your gut”
(Dr Peter Wilson: University College London Hospital)
• “The superhighways for bacteria are hands and the surfaces we touch”
(Sally Bloomfield: Microbiologist Professor)
• “Without cleaning, a small area on your desk or phone can sustain
millions of bacteria that could potentially cause illness”
(Dr Charles Gerba: University of Arizona)
In a study carried out by the University of Arizona, it was discovered that the average computer keyboard contains 400 x more germs than the average toilet seat - including e.coli. Keyboards are littered with crumbs, nails, hairs, skin, insects and other particles that build up through daily use. Monitors are usually peppered with stains of pointing fingers. Not only is your mouse a feasting ground for germs and microbes, but it catches dirt as it traverses the mouse mat, causing ‘sticky mouse’.
For your business
In the UK, businesses lose £11.7bn each year due to sickness. Some of that sickness can be prevented by regular computer cleaning.
The sharing of work equipment particularly in a call centre or hot desking environment increases hygiene risks as does a close working proximity and consequent airborne transmission of germs.
Benefits of regular cleaning
• The risk of data loss due to hardware problems caused by dirt build-up is greatly reduced.
• Expensive computer repairs, caused by dirt build-up, is greatly reduced.
• Morale in the office improves, as staff are happier using clean equipment.
• Absenteeism related to using dirty equipment is greatly reduced.
• Reduce the spread of sickness and infection:
Clostridium-difficile, Common cold, Swine flu, Warts & Impetigo
